Support

Many American bird and animal populations are declining or at risk due to human-caused factors including climate change, habitat corruption (e.g. pesticides killing off insects that birds eat, or glass windows in skyscrapers acting as invisible barriers), and habitat destruction (e.g. conversion from wild to agricultural), among other factors.

You can help to change this! The list of ways you can help is nearly endless, but some simple activities include:
  • Get out and see things! Whether you take a walk in a local park, or go on a guided boat trip, spending time outdoors will provide you with amazing experiences and help develop your own perspectives on the state of the world.
  • Help scientists understand the problem by recording your sightings in eBird, or by participating in key citizen science projects like Hummingbirds@Home or the Great Backyard Bird Count.
  • Support birds in your area by providing habitat--food, water, and shelter--in your yard or community. For instance, by planting native plants in your landscaping, you can reduce your water use while at the same time offering natural sources of food for local wildlife.
  • Provide financial support or volunteer time to organizations that are focused on monitoring and improving conditions for wildlife. In the San Francisco Bay area, good organizations include your local Audubon chapter, Point Blue Conservation Science, and the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, among others.
An easy way to help is to use Amazon Smile for all your Amazon shopping! When you sign in with your Amazon account, choose the non-profit you'd like to support, and then a portion of all your purchase dollars will be paid to that non-profit. Choose Napa-Solano Audubon as your charity, or any other favorite organization of yours.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step...
